Chasing Waterholes in Cairns

Although pubs and clubs won’t be back in full blown swing for a while, there are always watering holes of a different kind to soak off those daily stresses. There’s nothing like a dip in a crystal clear waterhole to cleanse and refresh the spirit. These are a few of my favourite water spots within the Cairns region to add to that tropical bucket list.

Stoney Creek

Nestled in the Barron Gorge National Park, Stoney Creek is a magical spot which boasts clean-flowing water all year round in a lush forest setting. Follow the winding 20 minute forest track to the waterfall, or stop at one of the many pristine waterholes along the way. If you’re wanting to burn some additional calories then lace up those runners and hike up to Glacier Rock; the ocean vistas from the top are jaw-dropping.

Crystal Cascades

A top notch nature spot, Crystal Cascades is certainly one to visit. Located just a stone’s throw away from Redlynch Valley, Crystal Cascades is an idyllic spot for those wanting an easy day out. With an accessible path that winds its way up to a cascading waterfall, there is no shortage of deep waterholes to cool off in along the way.

Fairy Falls

Off the beaten track, Fairy Falls can be accessed from the Crystal Cascades car park. It is a gorgeous walk to the swimming hole surrounded by a thick canopy of tropical rainforest and vines. Although small, this waterhole is very deep and offers a chance to swim directly under the falls. Bring a picnic and laze away the day on the rocks with an optimal view over the water.

Babinda Boulders

58 km south of Cairns, Babinda boulders offers a series of trails which offer breathtaking views. Photos don’t do this place justice and your eyes will be indulged to a visionary feast. From its dramatic bouldered landscape and emerald green waterholes, the beauty of Babinda Boulders must be experienced in the flesh. Warning: Take note of the places you can safely swim and do not swim here in wet season as there are dangerous currents.

Behana Gorge

A 45 minute upward hike will get your blood pumping and will ensure you’re ready for a splash in the crystal cool waters when you arrive at the top. One of my favourite waterholes, Behana Gorge is around a 30 minute drive South of Cairns. Stunning, smooth rocks give way to crystal clear deep pools. Tranquil is the keyword that comes to mind when thinking of this nature spot, which is well and truly away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

So what are you waiting for! Get exploring and keep chasing those waterfalls.
